WASHINGTON — Following an attack and attempted insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, in a day filled with violence and pandemonium, the nation is in a state of shock at what has long been the only logical endpoint to a Trump presidency that has been on a path to this moment since the day it began.
After years of violent rhetoric, governmental chaos, and a final year in office defined largely by the state of disarray that the entire country had fallen into, many Americans spent today somehow aghast at what transpired in Washington, DC.
For many in the country, it was impossible to believe that, in America, a president could assemble a mob to disrupt the democratic process over an election he had clearly lost, even after that president had spent months assembling a mob to do exactly that.
"This was the inevitable outcome of his presidency," said democracy expert Dickey Bloads. "It's been obvious since day one, and only became more obvious as we neared the end.
"I can't believe it's come to this. I'm beside myself."
