NEW YORK — In a meeting with senior executives of Fox News, Samantha Hawkins, a segment producer for Fox & Friends, expressed her enthusiasm for this election season's crop of migrant caravans heading north toward the United States.
“This is the strongest selection we’ve seen in over a decade,” Hawkins said during a presentation on her plans for covering the November elections. “We’ll have no shortage of menacing, frightening images that our viewers have come to expect.”
Ms. Hawkins highlighted a caravan originating from Venezuela as particularly promising. "It's got everything — a socialist country, desperate people, and a long journey. We can really play up the invasion angle," she explained.
The producer also mentioned smaller but "visually impactful" contingents from countries including Guatemala and Panama, emphasizing their value for television segments.
“We’re going to have our pick of the litter when it comes to content,” she said. “These caravans are diverse, numerous, and perfectly timed for our pre-election coverage.”
Ms. Hawkins went on to outline a comprehensive strategy for maximizing the caravans' impact on viewers.
"We've already commissioned dramatic music for our 'Caravan Watch' segments," she noted. "And we're working on a state-of-the-art graphics package that will make these groups look like advancing armies on a map."
By the time the meeting ended, Ms. Hawkins had been promoted to executive producer.
